Court Room Drama

I don't really see this as a genre as itself, but after thinking about all the movies this probably isn't a bad genre after all. Off the top of my head I really can't think of any movies that really call out court room drama. So I figured this would be the hardest of them all, seeing as it is not the normal genre title that most movies get. I of course looked up on Internet Movie Database, the top 10 movies for court room drama. The ones that I thought for sure would be on there and ones I hadn't even thought about got the top three spots on the list.

The first one I obviously understand. In high school it was a required book my sophmore year. Many people have to read it for school. It is a book about racism and the verdict of guilty on an innocent man. Anybody remember?? "To Kill A Mockingbird"! Atticus Finch is an up and coming Lawyer in a small southern town in the 1960's. When a young black man is accused of raping a white woman, Atticus agrees to defend him. As many know back in the slave day s and even after that black men were guilty until proven innocent. Atticus feels he should protect this innocent black man. I like how it almost follows the same relationship as the "Green Mile". The only person who knows the criminals innocence is the guy defending him. The story takes you through a towns unwillingness to not change, and the low standing of a black man in that time period. The things people take Atticus and his family through is absolutely ridiculous.

The second one was a repeat "12 Angry Men". So I'm moving to the third one on hte list..."The Verdict". This movie is about a lawyer who is very far from the judgemnet of the jury. he likes the bar better than the courtroom and rarely takes cases. He gets this one about a medical malpractice and decides it's better to go to court and refuse the $210,000 settlement. This of course makes them go to trial. As soon as he gets to trial he realizes not everybody he is working with is on his side. As his witnesses fall through and he is soon left with no one he realizes he has to think outside the box to win the case and the money. Can he do this the keep his reputation from falling under?

The 4th on the list is one that I thought of when I first saw this title. "A Few Good Men". This movie is very good and follows the guidelines to a good drama. This movie is about lawyer who doesn't really take his job seriously. He gets partnered up with a lawyer who is the complete opposite from him. Both having military backgrounds, are very hardheaded in their views. They get teamed up to defend these two marines who are accused of murdering one of their own. As the team talks to many guys on the same base as the victim, they find out he wasn't well liked by many of them. This is caused by his physical ability to keep up often getting the platoon punished. As more and more secrets unfold the real reasonm for this murder are getting burried. It takes this smoth talking team and one lousy General to show the true colors of this case.

Now for my favorite court room drame. I absolutely love the movie "I Am Sam". This movie is about a man who is mentally retarded by many tests. He gets this woman pregnant or so she says and he is to be a father to the baby. The day after having the baby home, the mother disappears and left the baby behind. He gets the help of his elderly neighbor to help him raise his daughter. Noone questions his parenting until his daughter starts to outsmart him in the second grade. His intelligence is now slightly lower and he must fight for custody of his daughter. This is inspiring to many people and he has the hearts of all. It is just up to the judge to make the right call.

Romantic Comedy

Romantic Comedy is the only genre I got to when I'm clueless as to what I want to watch. These types of movies never let me down and always entertain me without getting me depressed. The definition of a romantic comedy is: a humorous movie about a love story that ends happily. Even in the definition it says it has to have a happy ending. Many people believe these are the first date kind of movies that get the conversation going. Nobody wants to see a sad, angry, or depressing movie when they are trying to get to know each other. Romantic comedies are the movies that seem to get the most hype from the girl section while gangster and sport are along for the guys. So as always I'm going to start of with the top three then name my own personal favorite.

The number one on the list for romantic comedies is "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". This movie made over 241 Million since its debut. It is about a woman who lives in America with her very Greek family. All through life she was the ugly duckling shadowing her sibling's footsteps and not caring to much about her looks. While working at her father's restaurant, she waits on a very handsome man. This sparks something in her to want to better herself. She enrolls in college and learns how to hype up her look to catch the eyes of the handsome customer she once waited on. The trail she winds up on and the diversity of his background mixed with hers show the viewer how a real romantic comedy should be made!

The second movie on the list is "What Women Want", starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. This movie shows guys what it's like to be in a girls shoesfor a little while. After a freak accident Nick (Mel) is able to hear women's thoughts. He hears the deep dark dirty secrets of some and the painful secrets of others. He of course uses theses to better his standing with one women imparticular, Darcy (Helen) who got a promotion over him. He sets his sights on her to sell her ideas as his own. In his hurry he lets love get in the way and the story just builds on itself.

The third movie on the list is "Hitch". In the movie he is better known as the date doctor. If women have an issue finding love they call him up and he sets them up like a match made in heaven. Of course some women are skeptical and don't believe in such a man, but by the end of this movie you will hope there is such a man. The one client you follow throughout the movie is an overweight financial consultant, Albert, who has set his eyes on the very powerful Allegra Cole. With Hitch's help can he win her over? While albert is trying to win over Allegra the date doctor has met someone too. Will His own tactics work to get him the woman of his dreams and get rid of the reputation Hitch built for himself? The movie is funny and has a way to make the saddest person happy.

My favorite romantic comedy is by far "The Proposal". The big bad boss, Margaret, of the office is used to things going her way and scaring people . into working. When the guys above her bring the fact of her work visa is expired she comes up with a plan at the moments noticeHer assistant, Andrew, finds himself "engaged" to save his bosses job. The catch? He hates her just like everyone at the office. Someone else has it out for her too, the INS agent assigned to her. To prove the marriage is real Margaret goes on a family vacation with Andrew. The vacation will show just how strong their ties are. This movie is a brand new one out in 2009 and is full of fun and unexpected events.

Mystery

Mystery movies are very suspenseful most times. They are often based off books that slowly lead the movie. Like most movies based on books they leave out key parts because nobody wants to watch a four hour movie. The definition of mystery is: A story dealing with a crime and its solution. I like mysteries but most of them all follow the same story and you'll have the movie figured out halfway through.

The top mystery movie on the IMDB list is "12 Angry Men". The movie is about an 18 year old Latin boy who is standing trial for stabbing his father to death. Many witnesses said they heard screaming or saw the boy fleeing the scene. Of course all of the jurors call guilty, except one. The trial then turns the jurors into detectives figuring out what jurors came from and their prospectives and opinions on the cases.

The second movie on the list is "Rear Window". Both the top movie were made in the 1950's, just to give you an idea. Rear Window is about a man who is stuck in his apartment with a broken leg. So of course when you are bored you find ways to occupy yourself. Well he starts watching his neighbors and thinking up stories in his head. Well he notices things that don't quite add up with his neighbor and his wife who disappeared. He becomes convinced that the man killed his wife but had no evidence to prove it. Him, his girlfriend and his nurse come up with a way to catch him red heanded but this plan could leave them running for their lives. The funny thing to me is it sounds an awful lot like the movie disturbia that came out a year and a half ago.

The third movie on the list is "Fight Club". This movie is the definiton of mystery. I absolutely was so caught up in the plot I was not expecting any of the twists in the movie. The movie is about a man who is an insomniac and finds refuge in his frustration by starting a fight club. Word about the club gets out and soon the "Fight Club" is in every city. Soon the club gets out of control and he comes to the realization of what his life has become.

My favorite mystery movie is "Memento". This movie is set up very differently than any other movie I have seen. The black and white clips start from the beginning working its way to the middle and the color clips start at the end and work their way to meet in the middle with the black and white clips. The movie flips back and forth between the b and w films and the color. The main character suffers from short term memory loss so he leaves clues tattooed on himself, in notes he writes and pictures he takes. As the movie goes he slowly unravels the cases he is trying to solve about the murder of his wife. Mystery is the type of movie that never get old, and if you wait long enough you just might forget what happens and you can watch it for the first time all over again.

Sports

I am positive everyone has seen at least one sports movie and loved it. I am a girly girl and have several sports movies on my list of top movies. To define a sports movie is rather easy. It is a movie that has a dominating sports setting, whether it be golf, basketball, baseball, football, etc. Many sports movie has one low player or the whole team is considered bad. Sometime they come over considerable odds or they have a personal triumph throughout the movie. As I was going through the list of the ten sports movies I noticed many have been remade several different times since the original was put out. If not remade then a sequel was done. I find that many sequels to movies are never as good as the first which is I think a matter of opinion but I'm sure many agree.

The first sports movie I came across is "Raging Bull". I haven't seen this movie but it sounds like any other boxing movie. Since it hit number one I'm sure there are some original qualities in it that make it stand out against the other ones. The movie is about a grade A boxer who is prizewinning with his attack and attitude in the ring but when he uses the same attitude at home he soon realizes that that is not the way he wants to go. He wants his families love but they are to scared of him to give it to him one hundred percent. Many boxing movie characters have a very strong personality to win the crowd and many don't know when to draw the line with their family. The only movie where I think there is an exception is "Million Dollar Baby". The movie came out in, I think, 2005. There is determination and the leader boxer, a girl, knows how and when to draw the line between the ring and home.

The second movie on the list is the movie "Strangers on a Train". This movie is made in 1951, I have never heard of it but obviously it is good. The summary was very well written. The movie is about a Young man who meets a pro tennis player on a train and the tennis player jokes about wanting his wife dead instead of getting a divorce. The young boy wants his father dead but since he has a motive he cannot do it himself. The tennis player jokingly throws around switching murder victims. The young man takes it seriously and kills the tennis player's life. When he realizes it he takes matters into his own hands to frame the tennis player and his actions threaten the tennis player's life and pro career. It almost sounds like it should be an action movie instead of a sports to me.

The third movie on the list is "Iqbal". This movie sounds a little confusing to me. It is about the sport cricket in the country of India. One man despises cricket and of course ends up having a son who loves the game. The son then gets a farm hand to teach him the game and after a few victories at various matches he is on the India team. Well one boy doesn't like Iqbal because he is slowly taking his star spot on the team, so he tries his hardest to get Iqbal's father to get Iqbal off the team. If that was confusing for you them good for you, but I was lost by the end of it and had a hard time writing it here.

Since I have done the top three movies on the list I now get to do my favorite movie in the sports genre. It is very well known and it came in 36 on the list I am using. Can you guess it?... "Remember the Titans"! This Obviously is by far my favorite sports movie and it might take the drama card too. This movie is about a football team that is one of the fist schools to be integrated with the black schools. many of the teammates and parents have an issue with this. The team learns to overcome the trials and tribulations of segregation and inequality and make one of the best winning seasons in that teams history.

Western

This post will make five so this is halfway through the genre list I stated. This post is about western movies. I love western movies, this title is pretty self explanatory. All of the movies mostly have gun fights in old towns or horses and dynamite. I used to love watching these movies when I was little so my memory is pretty vague about them. The most famous actor in Western movies in my opinion is John Wayne. He is in every western movie I can think of. Western movies aren't on the top of everybody's list which is understandable but if you haven't seen one, broaden your horizons and watch one.

The number one on the list won by a landslide. It is "Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo" or in english... The Good, The Bad, The Ugly. I have heard of this but I have never seen it. It is about two men who are basically partners in crime. One turned his back on the other and ended up finding out there is gold buried but as luck would have it one finds out the area and the other finds out he exact location but has no idea where that location is. While they are fighting with each other there is a hit man out for one of them. They need to work together to keep their enemy and ex partner alive to find the gold.

The second one on the list is "Once Upon a Time in the West". I haven't ever hear of this movie but from reading the summary it seems pretty interesting. A young woman moves from the city to the frontier in Utah. When she arrives she finds her new husband killed. She is befriended by one of the prime suspects and the suspect tells her that she will find her husband's real killer and avenge his death.
The third movie on the list is "The Treasure of Sierra Madre". Again never heard of it before. I feel like what I thought I knew I really don't but anyway this movie is about two gentlemen that join together to find gold but everything they run into has different plans. It is a fight to keep their riches and maybe even their lives.

Now is the fun part, my favorite movie "The Magnificent Seven". This movie is about a small Mexican town that needs help. The village elders send 3 of the village men to find help. They come back with 7 men, all in it for different reasons. The movie is about the battles that the village and "magnifcent seven" go through.

These are the top western movies like them or leave them they are western.

Science Fiction

As I go through the genres I keep hitting several movies over and over. This genre is Science Fiction and as we all know Science Fiction is anything that has absolutely no chance of happening ever in today's society. I looked up on Internet Movie DataBase and found the top 50 SciFi movies. Now I don't like repeating movies in my title and there was one that was repeated from my Fantasy blog. It was Star Wars which of course is widely known to most everybody. These were the first two movies in the list so I am going to label the 3-5 movies and my favorite.

SciFi is interesting in itself. The ideas people create for these movies are absolutely phenomenal. I couldn't come up with a five minute section of a movie and these people come up with an hour and a half of exciting new ideas. Some movies do overlap but the majority is new and never before seen.

The number three movie on the list is The "Matrix". This movie is confusing as anything. I have watched the trilogy many times and have no idea whatis going on half the time. I like the story line that I can follow which I know isn't half of the actual story line. The movie is about a man "neo" who is The Chosen one by the robot society? and it's all about his adventure and his reign in cyberspace. The trilogy as always build of one another, but to actually get what the movie is about you can't just come in on the second movie or you will be lost.

The fourth one on the list is Wall-E. I have not seen this movie so I don't know much about it other than there is not one word in the whole entire movie. It is about a robot that is all by himself on earth after it has become polluted by trash. Wall-E is sent to clean up Earth. Eve is a robot who comes to earth to see if it is livable again. Wall-E of course falls in love with Eve and protects her from everything imaginable.

The fifth movie on the list is "Alien". This is one of the most SciFi movies I have read about. Like Wall-E I have yet to see it. It is about a spacecraft coming home from a long journey and when they are still in space they intercept a SoS. Of course they go to the location of the call. It turns out it wasn't a distress call but a warning. The crew goes exploring on the new planet and finds a lot of little leather eggs and one breaks open and the creature inside attaches itself to one of the crew members. This story is about the havoc that these creatures cause on the space craft.

Now my favorite Scifi is "The Prestige". This movie has so many twists and turns I wouldn't know where ot begin. It is about magicians but it isn't the average magician movie. There is violence and twist nobody sees coming. All I will say is if you haven't seen it, you don't know what you are missing. If you have seen the illusionist it is almost like. It just has a completely different story line.

Gangster

When you think of movie genres I'm sure gangster isn't the first one on your list. By the end of this I will talk about movies in this genre catagory that many people have seen. They just might think of them as action or suspense. Gangster movies are defined as films that offer a dark or fatalistic interpretations of reality.

The top gangster movie of the box office is..."The Godfather". If you haven't seen it you have atleast heard of it. The summary of the movie is one that just makes a movie sound good. There wouldn't be any trailer needed just the plot summary and people would flock to the theaters. Michael is Don's son. He has just returned from WWII and wants to stay out of the Mafia unlike the rest of his family. Virgil Sollozzo is a drug dealer who approaches Don about protection in return for some of the profits from his drug dealings. Don refuses and Sollozzo didn't like that answer at all. Sollozzo sends some hit men after Don who leave him barely alive. Michael starts a violent mob war trying to get even with the men who almost killed his father. This war tears apart his family even though he is trying to help them. I don't know about ya'll but I wouldn't just up and watch a movie like this I would have to be in the mood. It sounds like an action intense movie with some obvious fatalities.

"Scarface" is number two on the list. It is a film that follows the rise and fall of a Cuban immigrant in the 1980's. He starts off with petty crime that soon turns into
high time crime and he soon becomes a cocaine addick and dealer. Obviously when following a man like this he is bound to hit some trouble before his time is up.

"The Untouchable" is the third on the list. A man named Eliot Ness brings a group of mob fighters to bring down Al Capone. A name many have heard before... With that as Ness tries to get Capone many high up poice tell him if he catches Capone he is starting a war. Not often do you get a bad guy that the cops leave alone.

So we have done the top box office hit and now I will say my favorite "The Departed". Honestly I will say this is the only one on many lists of gangster movies that I have seen. This movie is about two men, one a cop one a mobster. Both trade sides in an attempt to get a one up on the other. When the cops and mob men find out there is a "rat" with them they each have to uncover the other one to make it out alive. The catch? Will either be able to turn on the men they have befriended from the other side.

With these movies uncovered I hope many people will open their minds and watch some of these good movies. Many people I have mentioned these movies to have said if you haven't seen them you are missing out.
